BACKGROUND
I was originally ask to create this birthday card by Chris Taylor for his church - the 'Whitby Christian Fellowship' back home where I grew up in Whitby, North Yorkshire. As it was specifically a 'Whitby Birthday Card', Chris thought it'd be nice to have icons of Whitby surrounding the text so, working together over the phone, I drew and painted this card.
Anyone who knows Whitby knows the iconic abbey standing alone on the cliff. Equally iconic but maybe not as popular is the ever-present seagull, dive-bombing tourists who are naive enough to eat their fish and chips in full view of the sky! Then of course there are the trawlers and cobles - witnesses to Whitby's oldest industry and the lighthouse which beckoned to the fishermen out at sea looking for haven. We were happy with the result I hope you are too!
DESCRIPTION
As I said, the card is taken from an original artwork which was created in March 2021 using Staedler Unipin 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and Winsor Newton inks. The prints are from the Copyshop, a local charity which works to rehabilitate folk recovering from mental health issues into the workplace. The card itself is A5 in size, measuring 5.83 x 8.27" or 148 x 210 mm. and comes with an envelope in a protective cello bag. The £4 cost includes postage.
