Birr Town is well worth a visit if you want to see the fascimile of The Gospel of MacRegol for free. The original, which now lives in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, was created around 800. It was also here that Brendan of Birr, one of the '12 Apostles of Ireland' founded a monastery around 540. For more information, read here.
